Die LTTE wurde 2014 vom Europäischen Gerichtshof von der EU-Terrorliste gestrichen, hauptsächlich aus verfahrensrechtlichen Gründen und weil die Organisation militärisch nicht mehr existiert.
Die tamilische Flagge als kulturelles Symbol ist in Deutschland nicht verboten und fällt unter den Schutz der Meinungsfreiheit (Art. 5 GG). Allerdings gibt es keine einheitliche Rechtsprechung, und Polizeibehörden gehen unterschiedlich damit um.
